Minneapolis, MN, October 11, 2010 - Since its inception in 1980, The American Royal Barbecue Contest has become the largest barbecue contest in the world.  Combined with a barbecue-trade show, this two-day, fun-filled festival draws nearly 70,000 people annually and is truly the “World Series of Barbecue.”


Spreading over 20 acres in Kansas City, the American Royal Barbecue has an Open Contest and an Invitation Contest that draws over 500 competitive teams.   The barbecue teams that participate in the Open Contest may consist of simple family or friend gatherings, while some are groups associated with various corporations or charities.   The Grand Champion of the Open Contest can then compete in the next year’s Invitational American Royal BBQ, as can the previous five year Grand Champions from the Invitational.


To qualify for the Grand Championship, all competing teams must prepare barbecued meats in four categories: chicken, pork ribs, beef brisket, and pork shoulder or Boston butt. Five optional categories include sausage, beans, potatoes, vegetables, and dessert.  A separate competition focuses on barbecue sauces.
